Yeonsangun of Joseon
The notorious 10th monarch of Joseon, known for his tyrannical rule and purges.
Chronology: 1476 – 1506
Early Life and Royal Succession
Yeonsangun, whose personal name was Yi Yung, was the 10th monarch of Joseon. He was the eldest surviving son of King Seongjong and the Deposed Queen Yun. His early life was marked by the political climate of the royal court, which later contributed to his downfall.
A Reign of Terror and Despotism
His rule is infamous for its brutality. Yeonsangun is notorious for launching two bloody purges, seizing hundreds of women from across the peninsula for palace service, and treating the prestigious Sungkyunkwan as a personal amusement ground. His actions represented a stark departure from the more liberal era of his father.
Downfall and Historical Legacy
Due to his despotic nature, Yeonsangun's reign ended in his overthrow. As a much-despised deposed king, he did not receive a temple name, cementing his place in history as a figure of profound tyranny within Joseon's annals.
