Chronology: 1899-12-26 – 1940-07-31
Early Life and Revolutionary Awakening
Born Sher Singh, Udham Singh was an active participant in the Indian independence movement, affiliated with the Ghadar Party and HSRA. His life was marked by anti-colonial sentiment, which later saw him adopt the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad while in custody.
The Quest for Justice and Pivotal Acts
His revolutionary fervor was deeply rooted in the memory of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. This event led to his most famous act: the assassination of Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab, on March 13, 1940.
Martyrdom and Enduring Legacy
Despite being tried and convicted of murder, his actions cemented his status as a great martyr, earning him the title Shaheed-i-Azam. His legacy is so profound that a district in India was named in his honor decades after his passing.
