Origins & Early Life

Sohrab Sepehri (7 October 1928 – 21 April 1980; Persian: سهراب سپهری) was an Iranian poet and painter, considered to be one of the five most famous Iranian poets who have practiced modern poetry alongside Nima Youshij, Ahmad Shamlou, Mehdi Akhavan-Sales, and Forough Farrokhzad. Sepehri's poems have been translated into several languages, including English, French, Spanish, Italian, Lithuanian and Kurdish. Sohrab was born in Qom, Iran on 7 October 1928. He grew up in a family that valued art and poetry.

Pivotal Works & Achievements

Literature and art, and in particular an appreciation for poetry and painting, are hereditary traditions in the Zarabi's (Persian: ضرابی) family. This is the first and largest cultural, artistic, and literary family in Iran. Sohrab Sepehri’s grandmother, Hamideh-Banou, who was from the Kalantar Zarabi's family and the wife of Malek al-Movarrekhin, was also a poet, and her poems were published in periodicals during the late Qajar era and the early years of the Pahlavi rule. Thus, Sohrab was born into a family with a longstanding heritage of artistic taste and culture. His grandmother, Hamideh-banou Zarabi, was a poet.
