Ovonramwen
The final Oba of Benin, whose reign marked the end of Benin's political independence.
Origins & Early Life
Ovonramwen (born Idugbowa; 1857 – 14 January 1914; rendered Overami in British records) was the thirty-fifth Oba ('king') of the Kingdom of Benin and its final ruler before the kingdom lost its political independence at the end of the nineteenth century. He succeeded his father, Adolo, in either 1888 or 1889 and adopted the regnal name Ovonramwen n'Ogbaisi ('The Rising Sun Which Spreads Over All'). His early reign involved rivalry between established palace chiefs and supporters of his accession, executions and court purges, provincial disputes and efforts to maintain Benin's authority as British influence expanded across the western Niger Delta and adjoining interior. In 1892 vice-consul Henry Gallwey negotiated a treaty that, in the British interpretation, restricted Benin's political and commercial independence.
Pivotal Works & Achievements
Ovonramwen did not personally touch the pen used to execute the agreement and continued to enforce established trade restrictions, royal monopolies and dues. Relations subsequently deteriorated as British officials and European merchants pressed for greater access to Benin's markets and resources, and by 1896 senior Protectorate officers were openly considering his removal...
