Ascension Through the ANC Ranks
Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa began his political journey in KwaZulu-Natal, gaining early prominence within the ANC Youth League. His career accelerated when he joined the National Assembly in 2002. Following the 52nd National Conference in December 2007, he was elected to the ANC's National Executive Committee and National Working Committee, positions he maintained until December 2022, marking a steady rise through the party structure.
A Decade in Cabinet Service
Mthethwa's ministerial career began in earnest in September 2008 when he was appointed Minister of Safety and Security by President Kgalema Motlanthe. He held various key portfolios, including Minister of Police from 2008 to 2014, a tenure marked by controversial events like the Marikana massacre. His roles expanded to include Minister of Arts and Culture in May 2014 and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture in May 2019, solidifying his presence in the executive branch.
Diplomatic Conclusion and Legacy
After dropping off the ANC's National Executive Committee at the 55th National Conference in December 2022, Mthethwa was sacked from the cabinet by President Cyril Ramaphosa in March 2023, leading to his resignation from the National Assembly. Despite these setbacks, he concluded his service by being appointed South African Ambassador to France, a role he held until his passing in September 2025.
