Nandalal Bose began his artistic journey under the tutelage of Abanindranath Tagore. His early life and training were deeply influenced by the aesthetic traditions of the Tagore family and the rich mural paintings found at Ajanta, setting the foundation for his distinctive 'Indian style' of painting.
Career Zenith and Institutional Leadership
A pivotal moment in his career was assuming the role of Principal of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, in 1921. Throughout his career, his classic works focused on subjects such as Indian mythologies, depictions of women, and scenes of village life, establishing him as a key figure in Contextual Modernism.
National Artistic Stewardship and Legacy
Bose's contribution to Indian art is considered paramount by many critics. His works received significant national reverence, notably when the Archaeological Survey of India declared his art treasures in 1976. Furthermore, he was entrusted with the important task of illustrating the Constitution of India.
