Hassan Nasrallah

Lebanese Shia cleric and militant who led Hezbollah from 1992 until his assassination in 2024.

Chronology: 1960-08-31 – 2024-09-27

Formative Years and Early Militancy

Hassan Nasrallah was born into a Shia family in the suburbs of Beirut in 1960. His education spanned from Tyre to a Shia seminary in Baalbek, where he also taught at an Amal school. His early political involvement saw him join the Amal Movement before becoming a founding member of Hezbollah in 1982, an organization formed specifically to confront the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

Ascension to Leadership and Regional Conflict

Nasrallah's role dramatically increased after he assumed the leadership of Hezbollah in 1992, following the assassination of his predecessor. Under his tenure, Hezbollah significantly enhanced its military capabilities, notably acquiring long-range rockets. His leadership was central to Hezbollah's actions leading up to the 2006 Lebanon War, and he later promoted the 'Axis of Resistance' to oppose Israel and the United States.

Final Stand and Enduring Legacy

During the Syrian civil war, Nasrallah positioned Hezbollah against 'Islamist extremists' while promoting the 'Axis of Resistance.' His final period of activity involved ongoing conflict following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. His life concluded tragically on September 27, 2024, when the Israeli air force attacked Hezbollah's headquarters, marking the end of his leadership.
