Chronology: 0024-12-24 – 0069-01-15
Early Life and Ascent to Power
Servius Sulpicius Galba was born into a wealthy Roman family. Throughout the first half of the first century AD, he accumulated significant public service experience, holding high magistracies such as praetor and consul, and serving as a governor in various provinces, including Gallia Aquitania and Germania Superior. His career culminated in him assuming the imperial throne following the suicide of Emperor Nero.
The Brief Reign of the Year of the Four Emperors
Galba's rule, which lasted for seven months, began in AD 68. However, his physical weakness and general apathy meant that his governance was heavily influenced by his favorites. Despite his initial assumption of power with the support of the Praetorian Guard, he struggled to maintain popular support or the loyalty of the military.
Assassination and Historical Conclusion
Galba's tenure ended violently when he was murdered. The assassination was orchestrated by Otho, who subsequently seized the imperial title, marking the conclusion of Galba's brief but pivotal role in the tumultuous Year of the Four Emperors.
