96th Emperor of Japan who overthrew the Kamakura shogunate, leading the Southern Court.

Chronology: 1288-11-26 – 1339-09-19

Early Life and the Fall of the Shogunate

Emperor Go-Daigo was the 96th emperor of Japan, whose early life was marked by the political instability leading to the downfall of the powerful Kamakura shogunate. He played a central role in the efforts to restore real power to the Imperial House, culminating in the establishment of the short-lived Kenmu Restoration.

The Zenith and Division of Imperial Power

Go-Daigo successfully overthrew the Kamakura shogunate in 1333, initiating the Kenmu Restoration. However, this period of imperial resurgence was ultimately challenged by Ashikaga Takauji in 1336, leading to a major split in the imperial family into the Northern and Southern Courts.

Legacy of the Southern Court

Following the division, Go-Daigo led the Southern Court based in Yoshino. His reign and the subsequent conflict defined a period of intense political struggle, representing the last time the emperor held significant real power until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
