Chronological Timeline (13 Entries)

  1. [1608] Space exploration — The first telescope is said to have been invented in 1608 in the Netherlands by an eyeglass maker named Hans Lipperhey, but their first recorded use in astronomy was by Galileo Galilei in 1609.
  2. [1620] Edmund Gunter — In 1620, he invented the first successful analogue device which he developed to calculate logarithmic tangents.
  3. [1753] Roger Joseph Boscovich — In 1753 he also discovered the absence of an atmosphere on the Moon.
  4. [1781] William Herschel — Crucially, he discovered the planet Uranus in 1781 through careful observation and verification.
  5. [1814] Joseph von Fraunhofer — In 1814, he discovered and meticulously studied the dark absorption lines in the solar spectrum, which are now known as Fraunhofer lines.
  6. [1930] Vito Volterra — His work is summarised in his book Theory of functionals and of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations (1930).
  7. [1950] Margaret Burbidge — She established herself as a foundational figure in the field during the 1950s through her pioneering contributions to the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis.
  8. [1960] Bruno Rossi — In the 1960s, he pioneered X-ray astronomy and space plasma physics.
  9. [1979] Steven Weinberg — He shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Abdus Salam and Sheldon Glashow "for their contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles".
  10. [1988] Roger Penrose — He shared the 1988 Wolf Prize in Physics with Stephen Hawking for the Penrose–Hawking singularity theorems, and the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity".
  11. [1995] Michel Mayor — Together with Didier Queloz in 1995, he discovered 51 Pegasi b, the first extrasolar planet orbiting a sun-like star, 51 Pegasi.
  12. [2006] Choi Hyun-suk — 8-year-old Choi (Korean age) first discovered rap and hip hop in first grade through Big Bang's documentary The Beginning (2006), and later through the work of Tupac and Eminem, also attending the latter's concert in Choi's country.
  13. [2016] Vera Rubin — Vera Florence Cooper Rubin (; July 23, 1928 – December 25, 2016) was an American astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation rates.
