Chronology: 1540 – 1586
Early Career and Roman Origins
Barbara Flaminia began her noted career in the mid-16th century, establishing herself as a prominent figure in Italian theatre. She was first documented in a performance in Mantova in 1562, where her origins were noted to be from Rome. Her early professional engagements included the Comedia dell'arte Hortensia and the Desiosi company.
International Acclaim and Rivalry
During the 1560s, Flaminia achieved immense fame, particularly alongside Vincenza Armani, with whom she was described as great rivals. Her international reach was marked by performances in major European centers, including Vienna in 1569 and Prague in 1570, where she may have been the first actress known by name to perform. She later toured extensively through Paris (1570–74) and Spain (1574–84).
Marriage, Touring, and Enduring Popularity
Flaminia's career was intertwined with her marriage to Alberto Naselli, a comedian and actor. Together, they toured the courts of Europe, often under her own stage name, Hortensia. Throughout her entire active period, she maintained incredible popularity with the public, who consistently attended her performances.
