Chronology: 1979-05-20 – Present
Origins & Early Journey
Andrew Scheer began his political career by being elected as the Member of Parliament for Regina—Qu'Appelle in 2004. He established himself in the House of Commons, notably serving as the 35th Speaker of the House of Commons from 2011 to 2015, a role he achieved at the age of 32, making him the youngest speaker in the chamber's history. His early career was marked by consistent re-election victories in 2006, 2008, and 2011.
Innovation & Iconic Era
Following the Conservatives' defeat in 2015, Scheer mounted a campaign for the party leadership, winning in May 2017 with the slogan of "Real conservative. Real leader." He served as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada from 2017 to 2020, during which time he also held the role of Official Opposition Leader. His tenure included the 2019 federal election, where the Conservatives gained 26 seats, though they remained the Official Opposition.
Legacy & Impact
After resigning as party leader in December 2019, Scheer's involvement continued in opposition roles. He was selected to lead the opposition again for the first three months of the 45th Parliament in 2025, until Pierre Poilievre was elected in a by-election. Throughout his career, he has maintained policy focus on economic development, fiscal restraint, and opposing the federal carbon tax.
